STANDING STANDARD | Matter’s manner
What we. tend to forget is that everything is an abstraction. We. are always moving matter. Objects are what they are : time and subjectivity is what give them their meaning. Our models never have patterns nor drawings, only color and volume; marked by our attitude. Matter is free.
Each time, we. have to plan the duel enough for our studio not to become a battlefield. Despite the scale, the model dictates its laws. Its development is a fight for the form.
Taking its own shape, autonomously forming, appears a rough-and-tumble between marking and erasing the trace of the hand. Notwithstanding pain, danger, and the use of tools, it always gains its rank of exterior object.
French word “maquetter” stands for “making a model” as well as “making a layout”. Models act the same way directing the project.
Impossible to be as omnipotent – or by chance, possible not to be as omnipotent – as in a building site. It is not the test of the construction but the one of the standard. Does it stand on its own? Reject the object to objectivate the project.
The respect we. owe to the matter came from its manner, presence and resistance. This process is the physical battle of the project to début in the world. Becoming something else, it remains on its own.
Independent, models live without explanation. They have enough presence to support all meanings. They arouse them acting as spatial attraction points, becoming a common object, permanent. They acquire a power of fascination; distance themselves.
Architecture should be a big model, just totally out of control.
